Who cares what Katherine was wearing, what truly caught the media’s attention was that tiara. Yes. the very same one that gave Princess Diana massive headaches, the legendary Lover’s knot tiara that has been passed on from generation to generation, landing beautifully on the Duchess of Cámbridge’s perfectly shaped head.
What did Kate wear to the ball?
Our ever-so-diplomatic duchess stayed true to the British fashion industry by wearing a bespoke red Jenny Packham creation that was beautifully offset by the Lover’s Knot tiara.
What is so iconic about the tiara?
The tiara was made by Royal jewellers Garrard in 1914 to Queen Mary’s personal design, from pearls and diamonds already in her family’s possession. In her will, Queen Mary left the tiara to the Queen, who wore it frequently, including at an evening event in 1955. By this point, the top layer of pearls had been removed and returned to Queen Mary’s brooches. In 1981 she gave it as a wedding present to Prince William’s mother, Diana, who wore it for the first time at the state opening of parliament that November. It is now in the Duchess of Cambridge’s collection; she wore it for the second time to Buckingham Palace’s annual Diplomatic ball on the 9th of December.
