Celeb Look of The Week: Dakota Johnson

The 2018 Golden Globes red carpet was brimming with Hollywood stars wearing black in order to support the Time’s Up movement toward gender equality, and Dakota Johnson was no different. The actress stepped out for the awards night in a beautiful Gucci dress with a flowing train, but unlike some of the other dresses on the red carpet, hers had a special surprise in the back. The back of Johnson’s dress had a gigantic silver star embellishment on it with delicate silver beaded lines that fell toward the bottom of her skirt. The surprising detail was fully concealed from the front of her dress so it could only be seen once she turned around. The front of the dress was simple, with a silver buckle at her waist and thin black straps. Johnson accessorized the gown with Nirav Modi dangling earrings and two simple silver Nirav Modi bangles. What a chic way to make a surprise style statement.❤

Christian Louboutin x Sabyasachi : An Indian Fashionista’s Dream Come True

Couture tradition is invigorated with creative electricity and sheer joie de vivre, as new and classic Christian Louboutin styles are reinvented and hand-crafted, each one-of-a-kind and some made-to-measure, in the most exquisite sari fabrics – all from Sabyasachi’s personal collection. With Christian Louboutin, the story is always a fairytale sprinkled with magic. In this true story, a chance meeting between the two designers in Sabyasachi’s Mumbai boutique lead to an immediate connection ignited by their boundless creativity and shared the adoration of India’s culture, exquisite craftsmanship, and love of food. “Like some of the best things in life, this was completely unplanned and by chance,” Sabyasachi said when referencing meeting Christian for the first time. Sabyasachi confesses that upon first meeting Christian, he asked if they could collaborate. To which Christian exuberantly responded, “Yes!” An expression of this joyful connection first came in July 2015, when Christian Louboutin conspired to create the extraordinary shoes that walked the runway of Sabyasachi’s annual couture show held in Mumbai, followed again in October 2016, with a small number …

Introducing Threads Stitched by Standard Bank

The global Fashion industry today is worth 3 trillion USD however, Sub-Sahara Africa accounts for only 1% of that. A staggering statistic, considering that the apparel and textile industry has the potential both to create jobs and contribute to a country’s economy. In today’s digital world, consumers worldwide are eager to discover products from afar – in this regard, fashion is a powerful brand builder for a country interested in exporting their cultural capital. Of all the potential obstacles to growing this market in South Africa, it seems creative talent and exposure are the least of what hinders upcoming fashion brands from thriving on the international scene, access to finance even less. There is a definite need for teaching the business of fashion – fashion entrepreneurs need to be supported in professionalizing their enterprises and running a truly profitable business. There is real opportunity to take South Africa’s up-and-coming fashion designers and turn them into powerful fashion CEO’s. Given the appropriate support, these fashion entrepreneurs could be running profitable businesses capable of competing on the …

How These Babies Made Their Mark In Pop Culture History

Whether or not you watched Sex and The City: The Movie, you’ve probably seen the now famous blue Manolo Blahnik satin pumps Carrie wears to marry her long-time love, Big. The proper title for the shoe is the Hangisi, but over the past few years, it has been appropriately dubbed the “Something Blue” pump, for its role as the shoe of choice to accompany Carrie Bradshaw’s wedding gown and embedding itself in pop culture history. While the Sex and the City movie introduced the Hangisi/ Something Blue pump to the masses, the phenomena wouldn’t be nearly as far-reaching as it’s become if this wasn’t a very special shoe. Pop Culture Magic The shoes were not just another fabulous item from Carrie Bradshaw’s wardrobe, they played a significant role in the movie. So significant they could have been listed in the closing credits. Originally, Carrie buys them to wear with a simple, secondhand ivory suit she picks up at a vintage shop. The suit is not a designer label or even a name brand, and is …

The Queen Regnant VDJ2017 Diary

VDJ2017- Another year, another Vodacom Durban July done! My diary started quite early at the Hilton Durban this year- getting my hair and makeup done for VDJ2017 was a top priority. My dress was customised according to a Berta bridal creation that featured a cape, which seemed fitting to the #ColourOfMagic theme this year. I wore a headpiece for the first time in my life and I was terrified of tripping over the cape so I wore ballet pumps that were embellished with red lace trimmings that matched my ensemble. The look was tied together with a string of pearls, pearl stud earrings and a matching red clutch from Forever New. Watching the fashion events and competitions earlier on, it was breathtaking knowing that there is such phenomenal talent in the hands and minds of South African fashion designers. The interiors of the marquees at the VDJ2017 were amazing and the setup of the entire event itself was striking. We had the opportunity to catch up with a lot of people, celebrities and fellow Durbanites …

Oscars 2017: Why Stars Wore Blue Ribbons On The Red Carpet

I am so proud of how Queen Regnant has evolved. As much as the red carpet is so glamorous, the world is plagued with serious issues that require a platform, such as the Academy Awards red carpet, to be highlighted. This year, the accessory of the night at the Oscars was not a shiny designer clutch or a strappy stiletto. It’s a blue American Civil Liberties Union ribbon. Ruth Negga, nominated for the best actress Oscar for her portrayal of Mildred Loving in “Loving,” wore the ribbon with a red floor-sweeping Valentino dress. “Loving” is based on the true story of a couple who were banished from Virginia for their interracial marriage. The A.C.L.U. took up the case and brought it all the way to the United States Supreme Court, which struck down miscegenation laws — those that enforced segregation in intimate relationships — in 1967. Lin-Manuel Miranda, nominated for best original song, wore a ribbon, too (as did his mother, Luz Towns-Miranda). He paired his with a slightly more low-key option than Ms. Negga’s: …

Celeb Look Of The Week: Kate Middleton

Who cares what Katherine was wearing, what truly caught the media’s attention was that tiara. Yes. the very same one that gave Princess Diana massive headaches, the legendary Lover’s knot tiara that has been passed on from generation to generation, landing beautifully on the Duchess of Cámbridge’s perfectly shaped head. What did Kate wear to the ball? Our ever-so-diplomatic duchess stayed true to the British fashion industry by wearing a bespoke red Jenny Packham creation that was beautifully offset by the Lover’s Knot tiara. What is so iconic about the tiara? The tiara was made by Royal jewellers Garrard in 1914 to Queen Mary’s personal design, from pearls and diamonds already in her family’s possession. In her will, Queen Mary left the tiara to the Queen, who wore it frequently, including at an evening event in 1955. By this point, the top layer of pearls had been removed and returned to Queen Mary’s brooches. In 1981 she gave it as a wedding present to Prince William’s mother, Diana, who wore it for the first time …

Steal Her Style: Audrey Hepburn

The term “style icon” is synonymous to her name. Audrey Hepburn is and will always be a style icon for many reasons, namely her love affair with Givenchy and her sprinkles of Louis Vuitton and Ferragamo. Audrey’s style stands out because of her simple pieces that were well tailored. Tailored Clothes Well fitted clothes elongate the body and gives a good shape. Audrey’s clothes were fitted to accentuate her flattering waist. Pumps Audrey was really tall, so she stuck to flats or kitten heels. Ballet pumps, if worn correctly, can give an outfit a glamorous appearance. Try to opt for plain ones with less or no embellishment. LBD Black elongates and slims down any body type. Wear a black dress and its a party (or Breakfast At Tiffany’s). Choose an elegant style with a length that sits on the knee. Gloves Gloves serve a dual purpose: making an ensemble look uber chic and protecting your kitty paws from harsh UV rays. Why not? Choker A choker elongates the neck and it doesn’t clash with the …

How To Break In Tight Heels

I have wide feet, but when I see a pair of heels that I want, my wide feet is the last thing on my mind! I’m sure we’ve all been in that situation: you try on the perfect pair of heels and it looks stunning and when you walk a few metres in them, you realise that those heels are tight. It fits but it’s just too tight! Thank goodness that those slippers aren’t made of glass (sorry Cinderella, I don’t have advice for you), I have the perfect solution! 1. Firstly, scuff the bottom of your heels to prevent slipping. Rub a piece of sandpaper in a side-to-side motion across the bottom of the shoe. The roughness mimics the wear and tear of walking in a fraction of the time. 2. Slip on a pair of thick socks, then put on your heels. Moist socks might feel a little icky, but they’ll help soften and stretch out snug heels. Walk around the house for 20 to 30 minutes, then take off the socks and see …

Celeb Look Of The Week: Naomi Campbell

Naomi Campbell arrived at the Princess Grace Awards Gala in New York this week looking a vision in a couture creation by Ralph & Russo that highlighted her fabulous figure with its body skimming design, nipping her in at the waist and balancing her slight curves out with a gentle fishtail. The dress had a textured finish and a beautifully embellished cape that was draped over one shoulder, which glistened when it moved. The ensemble flared out at the hem and formed a train. The dress was accessorised with a silver clutch, as well as a gleaming bracelet and a large diamond necklace.
